ARTIST STATEMENT
“KolorXploration” encompasses a disciplined effort over the last year (2018-2019) to create a unique body of studio portrait work. More specifically, the intent of this self-directed project (which evolved from my Advanced Studio Lighting Techniques studies) was to abandon my comfort zone(s) and “explore”…more creative studio lighting techniques; the application of color theory principles and/or dramatic use of color (via colored gels); new camera techniques; and lastly, a committed effort to collaborate with fellow artists and talent.
Prior to studying studio lighting, I spent several years primarily utilizing available (natural) light with my photography. However, after a few studio assignments, and the discovery of portrait photographers like Nick Fancher, Lindsay Adler, and Jake Hicks, I quickly realized that there were endless creative opportunities in the studio - I was hooked. I set out to use every type of light, light modifier, piece of equipment, etc. available to me in the studio and to employ techniques that I read about, studied, stumbled upon, or in some cases, discovered inadvertently.
This project also represents another huge shift in the direction of my photography - a committed effort to shoot portraits. Prior to this project, I primarily created “non-people” photographs…landscapes, architecture, abstract subject matter, etc. However, I again felt the need to step out of my comfort zone and “explore” something new. And as an artist and musician, I was struck with an interest in collaborating with other creative and talented individuals. Through this project, I have had the privilege of working with local actors, artists, body builders, comedians, creative directors, dancers, educators, fashion designers, fashion models, fellow photographers, fitness trainers/models, hair and makeup artists, mixed martial arts fighters, musicians, and writers.
It is my hope that this project will: inspire others to “explore” and abandon their comfort zones; initiate discussions of creative and professional growth; and, promote the efforts of the talented individuals who I have had the privilege of working with over the last year.
